• Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Specialized Care for the Smallest and Sickest

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit helps nearly 300 premature and critically ill infants recover and grow stronger each year. If your baby needs specialized care or observation, it is reassuring to know that NorthBay Medical Center is home to the regional Newborn Intensive Care Unit.  Our state-licensed facility is staffed by a team of physicians and nurses who specialize in newborn care (neonatologists and neonatal nurses).

With family-centered philosophy, parents and other family are encouraged to participate in their infant’s care as much as the baby’s condition allows. The staff works to help you take your baby home as soon as possible, with in-home support available to ease the transition.

The region’s referral center for premature and sick newborns, the NorthBay NICU transport team often comes to the rescue of a sick or premature newborn in distress. A team of two specially-trained nurses, a neonatologist, and a respiratory therapist speeds to nearby hospitals that need intensive care support to aid critically ill infants born there.
