Professional Profile:

As a thoracic surgeon, I perform surgery on the chest cavity, also called thorax. I provide surgical treatment for patients with diseases of the lungs, esophagus, chest wall, diaphragm and the area between the lungs (Mediastinum).

I specialize in thoracic oncology (cancers in the chest) using minimally invasive surgical techniques. As a surgeon, I work as part of a patient’s team of oncology specialists who orchestrate the best treatment plan for each individual.

With minimally invasive thoracic surgery I can offer patients a faster recovery time and safely treat high risk patients. Where traditionally, thoracic surgeons made a large chest incision and spread or cut the ribs to access the chest in order to perform surgery, the new surgical techniques use small incisions and a video camera to allow the surgeon to see inside the chest cavity. Surgery is performed using tiny surgical instruments inserted through one or two small incisions. This allows me to safely perform surgery on patients in their 80s and 90s with excellent outcomes.

I also participate on the NorthBay Trauma Team and may be called in to evaluate and treat a patient who has suffered multiple rib fractures or invasive injuries to the chest cavity.

I was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where my father was a physician. While I always wanted to be a doctor, it wasn’t until I did my surgical rotation with a thoracic surgeon that I discovered my passion for surgery. This thoracic surgeon became my mentor and long-time friend.

I enjoy developing long-term relationships with my patients. I find it very rewarding to restore a patient to good health and see them return to their chosen lifestyles. Patient education is very important to me and I spend a lot of time giving talks to community organizations and at senior homes.

When I’m not working, my life revolves around my wife and our four daughters. We live in Napa and enjoy spending time together as a family.
