    Our Vision:

We believe that our organization has a responsibility to encourage middle and high school students interested in a health care profession. Our vision at NorthBay Healthcare is to support these young people through the activities of the NorthBay Nurse Academy (NBNA). The NBNA is comprised of four complimentary and interdependent sub-programs: The Nurse Ambassadors, Follow-a-Nurse, Student Volunteers, and Nurse Camp. The layered vision is to introduce students to, encourage them to enter into, and support their decision to select healthcare as a career, then retain them in Solano County as an integral part of the healthcare team.

    Nurse Ambassador Program:

Since it’s inception in 2002, this grassroots RN program has been recognized at the state level by the Coalition for Nursing Careers in California for its positive promotion of nursing in the community. Nurse Ambassadors from various units visit schools on a monthly basis over lunch to give presentations and provide information on careers in health care. One area high school has even made an official club based on these meetings! Its premier elements include:

    • Nurse Ambassador Representatives at two Junior High
    • Schools and six Senior High Schools within Solano County
    • Speakers available to teachers for classroom presentations
    • Career day representation
    • Nurse Camp

The annual Camp provides a first-hand look at the nursing profession through the use of on-site demonstrations, hands-on skills labs, interactive presentations, observation of actual patient/nurse interactions, and many other learning activities. Nurses from various hospital and outpatient units collaborate with community groups to provide the “campers” with four days of immersion into the world of nursing.

    The Camp provides:

    • Hands-on experience for students exploring nursing as a career
    • Access to nursing staff as role models and to ask questions in a non-threatening environment
    • Exposure for students from health-care studies to the acute care environment of the hospital
    • The camp is open to all high school students residing in Solano County who have an interest in pursuing nursing as a career.

This program is for individuals who are interested in learning more about a career in Nursing and allows teens the opportunity to shadow a nurse for a portion of a day. This is a minimal commitment for the student, yet gives them an accurate look into the day to day activities of a nurse. They get a sense of what a nurse does on a daily basis and observe the R.N. as s/he cares for her/his patients.
