Picnics and Diabetes
I have been seeing one of my clients for many years and he always comes in with a younger family member who interprets for him. The last time I saw this client I noticed that his family member, who had been on diets in the past, had lost a large amount of weight. I asked her what her secret was and she piped up: “Pinterest!”
Pinterest is a photo-sharing website that has been described as a “catalog of ideas.” It has creative suggestions for everything from how to build furniture to how to plan a wedding. I have a Pinterest app on my phone but I had never really explored the food ideas. I asked the young interpreter about her diet changes and found out that she had switched from rice to quinoa and lentil recipes, along with other healthy choices.
I decided to look for myself. I logged onto my Pinterest account and searched for “diabetes recipes for picnics.” I was looking for a 4th of July picnic recipe that could compete with the iconic macaroni and potato salads of summertime picnics, and I found it: A quinoa salad with arugula and sundried tomatoes with a lemon/olive oil dressing! I’m happy to say it was a big hit!
So, the next time you’re looking for ideas you might try looking at that Pinterest app on your smart phone. Of course, if you have any questions about recipes or diabetes information you find on the Internet, you can always ask your diabetes educator, dietitian or primary care provider for answers.
