Golf Classic A Big Success

July 19, 2016

It’s a wrap — and a successful one at that — for the 33rd Annual NorthBay Guild Golf Classic.

The July 15 event raised nearly $60,000 to support NorthBay Healthcare’s Trauma programs, according to Jane Hilliard, director of Volunteer Services. “That’s an increase of almost $35,000 over last year’s event, thanks in part to a savings on the cost of the venue and the tremendous support we received from Medic Ambulance and Touro University,” she noted.

From start to finish, everything was different about this year’s NorthBay Guild Golf Classic — except for the rounds of golf, of course.
More than 144 golfers traveled to Mare Island for this year’s tournament, where they first gathered at Vino Godfather Mansion.

There they were offered a brunch reception, hosted by fedora-clad Guild volunteers wearing gangster-themed shirts.

After noshing on breakfast burritos, mimosas and Bloody Mary’s in IV bags, golfers were shuttled off in a motorized cable car to the golf course, located more than a mile away. Many took their turns at a putting contest before the noon shot-gun start. A light fog, drifting in off the San Francisco Bay, soon burned away, offering golfers fantastic views at nearly every turn.

This is the sixth year Guild members voted to have funds raised at the tournament support the NorthBay Medical Center Trauma program, so some holes featured a trauma theme. At one, hosted by Trauma Program Director Heather Venezio and Jackie Nelson, trauma registrar, golfers were offered Jello shots in syringes. At another, golfers were offered a beverage in a specimen cup.

At other holes, volunteers offered to take photos of the foursomes, invited them to take part in a “closest to the hole” or “Strike Out Cancer” competition or to donate to a 50/50 raffle.

After the rounds were complete, golfers were shuttled back to the Vino Godfather Mansion for games of chance, a dinner prepared by Outback Steakhouse and dancing to the music of The Rhythm Method 4.

An awards ceremony preceded dancing, where it was learned that the winner of the 50/50 raffle — Pete Kreuser of DPR Construction — opted to contribute his winnings back to the Trauma Program.

“Golfers seemed to really enjoy the views and venue at Mare Island and appreciated the dinner and dancing afterward,” noted Jane Hilliard, director of Volunteer Services. “We could not have pulled it all off without the tireless work of our many volunteers, and the help of our generous donors, particularly top sponsors Medic Ambulance and Touro University.”
