Toys and Trauma?
December is the gift giving month, especially with holiday season. Although, gifts are great, age appropriateness should be taken into account with any gift given. You would be surprised with all the eye injuries sustained by a toy, don't let this happen to a child you love.
Avoid gifts that are sharp or dangerous like pellet guns, rifles and darts. If this year you plan on gifting a bike, scooter, or skateboard make sure you provide the child with a helmet or other protective equipment that could be utilized. Make sure that any gift is age appropriate and does not have any small parts or other choking hazards for toddlers. Use the cardboard core of a toilet paper roll to test if a toy is a choking hazard- if a toy can pass through; it is too small for young children and may cause them to choke if swallowed.
Ornaments are another discussion, these can appear as toys to small children;ensure that they are out of reach. Ornaments made of glass should be placed higher or replaced with ornaments that do not shatter. Should an ornament break, instruct children that accidents happen, to ask for help and never to touch the sharp glass. Trauma should be avoided at all costs during the holiday season, follow these tips and enjoy your time with your loved ones!
