NorthBay Hospice Program Seeks New Volunteers
By Linda Pribble, NorthBay Hospice & Volunteer Coordinator. For 26 years, NorthBay Healthcare has offered hospice and bereavement care for the Solano County community because it’s important and it’s the right thing to do. Our hospice team strives to ease pain for those facing life-limiting illness and address emotional needs of the patient and their loved ones with education, counseling, respite services and bereavement support.
Without volunteers, that just can’t happen.
Our multi-skilled volunteers do many things for our patients, their families, and our programs. They keep patients company, offer caregivers a break, handle paperwork, answer phones and even participate in special projects and fundraisers.
The use of volunteers is not unique to NorthBay. There are roughly 468,000 hospice volunteers in the United States today. These volunteers are so valued that it is federally mandated under Medicare that 5 percent of all patient care hours be provided by trained hospice volunteers.
The ecology of hospice is grounded in the community. At NorthBay, our volunteers are essential in helping us provide the care that is so much a part of our mission in serving the entire person as holistically as possible, offering support and upholding the dignity of those facing a life-limiting illness.
Our interdisciplinary team includes a physician, nurse, nurse’s aide, social worker, chaplain and volunteer.
Not only are 30-plus hours invested in training volunteers, but NorthBay pledges to use each volunteer’s skills to the best of their strengths and interests. As we move forward, we want to look at the spectrum of needs and skills and encourage volunteers to have room to express their talents.
This month, we are recruiting volunteers to become a vital member of our hospice team.
A training program will begin in August. If you are looking for a way to give back, or you are simply someone who wants to do something positive in your community, let us begin the conversation. Why not become one of our local hospice volunteers in Solano County? Help us serve our share of the nearly 1.58 million Americans helped by hospice each year.
