Professional Profile

From an early age, I knew I wanted to be in a profession that helped others. Becoming a nurse just seemed to be the natural path to take. While completing my general education courses, I was hired as a secretary for a neonatology group. Even though I had no secretarial skills, the neonatologists, nurses and administrators took me under their wing. In addition, I worked part-time as an NICU technician in a teaching hospital. The medical director for the NICU fostered a passion in me for neonatal care, and I went straight into the NICU as a new graduate nurse.

I am a consummate life-long learner, and obtaining my master’s degree in nursing with a neonatal nurse practitioner certificate, followed by a PhD in nursing, were the next logical steps. I have the best of both worlds: I work in the clinical setting as a neonatal nurse practitioner and conduct research as a consultant with Stanford University. Understanding the value of evidence-based practice and quality improvement allows me to provide the highest quality of care to our newborns and families. Parents are part of the care team and I value and respect their input, questions and dialogue. I am fortunate to spend these moments with families in our community and when they deliver their infant at NorthBay.

Beyond caring for critically ill infants, I am an integral part of the medical team, a mentor for nurses and a peer with physician colleagues. Working with my colleagues is one of the best aspects of my job.
