Professional Profile

My first view of orthopedics came as a patient. I was a Julliard-trained dancer well on my way to a successful career when hip joint pain forced me to see a doctor. At age 12 I had injured my hip in an accident at summer camp. Ten years later an undiagnosed bone infection from that time had come back to haunt me and the prognosis wasn't good for a dancer. The orthopedic surgeon told me to find another career.

The doctors I met during this time gave me empathy for people who get hurt, and I felt becoming an orthopedic surgeon would be a valuable way to spend my life. So I pursued a medical degree and became one. I did a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery and this is my area of expertise. Trauma is really a subspecialty of orthopedics, because much of my work consists of repairing broken bones and injuries caused by accidents.

Right after my training, I went to Bali to relax. I arrived in October 2005 on the day of the major terrorist bombing. Instead of a vacation, I went to Sanglah Hospital in Denpassar, Bali, introduced myself, and helped them care for the injured. It was total immersion in Level I trauma. I enjoy surgery because everyone works together in concert for the benefit of the patient.

My hobbies include scuba diving, kite surfing and traveling to watch my brother, a dancer, perform.
