their lives at NorthBay Medical Center. Today, more than 1,500 babies a
year are born at the Fairfield hospital, making the NorthBay Medical
Center staff one of the most experienced in the area. Our maternity
services features labor, delivery and recovery rooms where mothers and
families can experience the birth of the new baby in one comfortable,
home-like room.
Newborn
Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
The
NorthBay Medical Center Newborn Intensive Care Unit is a skilled, warm
and safe environment where about 300 premature or sick babies recover
and grow each year. The unit is state-licensed and staffed by a team of
neonatologists (physicians who specialize in newborn care) and nurses
who are specially trained in neonatal care.
The
NICU neonatal transport team often comes to the rescue of a sick or
premature newborn in distress. A team of two specially-trained nurses, a
neonatologist and a respiratory therapist speeds to nearby hospitals --
such as Sutter Solano -- that need intensive care
support to aid critically ill infants born there. The NICU physicians
and staff help parents take their babies home as soon as possible. When
appropriate for the baby and family, professionals with the same level
of training and skill available within the NICU can oversee the baby's
care at home.
