Lactation Support for Employees, Patients a Continuing Effort

Creating a new lactation room at the Green Valley Center for Primary Care is just the first step in an ongoing effort to expand lactation space for patients and employees throughout the NorthBay Healthcare system.

Creating lactation support for employees including a designated space is part of NorthBay Healthcare’s Nursing Strategic Plan 2015-2017 through the Shared Governance Structure.

NorthBay’s lactation team surveyed employees and the response was overwhelming: Being Solano County’s only Baby Friendly facility raises the bar and expectations for employees who have returned to work and are continuing to breastfeed.

NorthBay leaders have heard and are taking action.

Traci Duncan, vice president and chief nursing officer, has put together a team including Dante Tolbert, assistant vice president, Hospital Division, Greg Duncan, director of facilities and Katie Lydon, director of Women’s and Children’s Services. The team is looking for additional spaces beyond the second floor at NorthBay Medical Center. In fact because space is at such a premium, the team is exploring portable lactation lounges at both hospitals that will suit employees’ pumping needs and to relocate the spaces through current expansion projects.

Additional efforts are being led by Diane Harris, director of Women’s Health, to create lactation space for patients and employee pumping throughout the NorthBay System.

The Green Valley Administration Center already has a room designed as a private space for women who choose to pump.
