NICU graduates from the past 31 years came together Aug. 6 at the Green Valley Administration Center for the annual NICU Reunion. More than 250 guests, including 71 NICU graduates ranging in age from 3 months to 30 years attended the event.

Tony Capretto, 30, one of the first NICU grads, attended the party with his wife Sarah, a nurse on Unit 1800 at NorthBay Medical Center. The Dixon resident holds a master’s degree in sports management and currently works for Sonoma Raceway. Their first child will be born at NorthBay this fall.

This year’s theme was “Safety First” and representatives from Fairfield Fire, Fairfield Police, California Highway Patrol and Medic Ambulance shared safety tips with the youngsters and their families. Infection Prevention nurse Vicki Norris demonstrated hand hygiene and Nurse Recruiter Donna Dabeck brought her cockatoo Jazzy to teach pet safety.

The event gave families the opportunity to visit with the doctors and nurses who cared for their children in the NICU. There were children’s games and a barbecue lunch served up by volunteers.

Making it all possible were NorthBay staff members and friends who donated their time, NorthBay Guild and teen volunteers and participants from the 2016 Nurse Camp.

Staff from Women and Children’s Services contributed more than 140 safety themed cupcakes for the “cupcake walk” which is always the biggest hit.

“A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped with this year’s event,” said longtime organizers Janelle Grindle, R.N., and Megan King. R.N.  “We couldn’t do it without you.”
