Go PINK With Us!: Breast Cancer Events Abound
It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to increase awareness and focus on the importance of early detection, NorthBay Healthcare is hosting and participating in several local events during the next several weeks.
About one in eight U.S. women — about 12 percent — will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in U.S. women, along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
NorthBay Cancer Center treated 175 breast cancer patients in 2015, up from 130 the year before. Thankfully, improvements in cancer research and treatment, along with early detection, mean many women are surviving breast cancer today.
Luncheon Oct. 13
In addition to the #OurDocTalk live Facebook chat with oncologist Brian Vikstrom held Oct. 5 (See story page 17), NorthBay Cancer Center will host its 14th annual breast cancer event tomorrow (Oct. 13), including a catered lunch under a tent at the VacaValley Wellness Center, 1020 Nut Tree Road in Vacaville.
Those who attend will learn about the latest developments in cancer treatment along with tips for prevention and risk reduction from Oncologist Jonathan D. Lopez, M.D. during the event , which will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $10. For tickets, visit http://bit.ly/2dGegPd.
There will be a special presentation of the Christine Franklin award to a local woman. The award is named after a NorthBay Healthcare volunteer who used her battle with breast cancer to educate others about the importance of mammograms and health care.
Immediately following the lunch, visitors are invited to join NorthBay for a special dedication of the James E. Lawrenz & Heidi Y. Campini Conference Center inside the Wellness Center.
How About Pizza?
From 5 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 20, NorthBay will join a dedicated crew of Vacaville firefighters as they take over Pietros’ No. 1 restaurant in Vacaville, don pink shirts and serve pizza as part of their “Passionately Pink for the Cure” fundraising event to benefit the NorthBay Cancer Center.
Last week a crew of Vaca-ville firefighters, led by Capt. Bruce Herbert III, visited the new NorthBay Cancer Center in Vacaville for a tour with Bea Castro, practice manager for oncology, and Louise Henry, clinical practice manager for oncology.
Pietro’s will donate 50 percent of every pizza order (dine-in or take-out) to the cancer center.
NorthBay employees, friends and family members are encouraged to come to the restaurant at 407 Cernon Street between 5 and 8 p.m., and 50 percent of every pizza order for dine in or take out will be donated to the Cancer Center. Pink Vacaville Fire Department shirts will also be on sale, for $20 each.
Last year’s event raised nearly $5,000, and the donation was matched by NorthBay Foundation Board member Stanley Davis.
Call (707) 446-1771 to phone in your order, and be sure to say it is for the “Passionately Pink” event.

Finally, on Nov. 17, NorthBay will host patient inspirational stories and a physician presentation event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Green Valley Administration Center, 4500 Business Center Drive in Fairfield.
