November: Time to Talk about Diabetes
November is “American Diabetes Month,” according to the American Diabetes Association, and the mission of designating an entire month for diabetes is to create awareness and begin the conversation around diabetes.
We can begin the conversation by removing some of the stigma associated with the word diabetes.
The graphic at right was taken from the website DIATRIBE, an organization seeking to improve the lives of people with diabetes and to “Make Sense of Diabetes.” It outlines how our conversation and way of communicating with people with diabetes can influence the culture around this condition. Let’s make an effort this month to begin this conversation with words that empower not shame, heal not harm. Let the conversation begin!
