Hospice & Bereavement Receives Big Boost from Donors

NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement received a record-breaking boost of support from area philanthropists during Open That Bottle Night, on Saturday, Feb. 11.

More than $173,000 was raised during the annual gala, organized by NorthBay Healthcare Foundation, to thank the most generous supporters and vendors of the Solano Wine & Food Jubilee. The Jubilee — Solano County’s largest fund-raising event for NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement — is now in its 30th year.  

The evening was jam-packed with tributes and surprises, including an unexpected philanthropy award presentation, the announcement of a new hospice program for veterans, and the unveiling of a website and app to support NorthBay Healthcare Foundation’s fundraising efforts.

At center stage were Al and Patt Shaw, who were presented with the Foundation’s Spirit of Philanthropy Award. The Shaws have been long-time supporters of NorthBay healthcare, providing generous gifts in the past decade to the Solano Wine & Food Jubilee, the Dream of a Lifetime and Hospice & Bereavement programs and, most recently, a Cuddle Cot for grieving parents who have lost their newborns. Al Shaw has also provided his leadership skills while serving as a NorthBay Healthcare Foundation board member since 2004.

Guests also learned that NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement is unveiling a new program to provide services to veterans in need, as they face their final battle in hospice. The new program, called “Mission to Serve,” will further Hospice & Bereavement’s quest to earn its fourth star in the “We Honor Veterans” program. Upon learning of the program’s goals, several guests stood up to pledge their support, and more than $53,000 was raised that night for this program alone.

Another presentation focused on, the NorthBay Healthcare Foundation’s website that highlights its philanthropic history of partnering with the community. It is an exciting new platform that offers users many ways to make a difference and to engage, including through use of the new, free app. The app can be found at Google Play and the iPhone AppStore, by searching for NorthBayC2C.

Guests at Open That Bottle Night were served a meal prepared by Merchant & Main’s Bob Tooke and daughter Jema Haggerman, who created a menu of nostalgic fare from the heyday of the famous Nut Tree Restaurant.

Entertainment was provided by nationally acclaimed artist David Garibaldi, who came on stage to paint — on the spot — three portraits. Accompanied by original Papa Roach drummer David Buckner, Garibaldi dabbed brushes — and even his hands — in paint, and then applied the paint in wide, dramatic strokes to the blank canvases. Within minutes, the images of Marilyn Monroe, the Statue of Liberty, and Jim Lawrenz, former chairman of the NorthBay Healthcare Foundation board of directors, emerged on the canvases. All portraits were later sold to the highest bidders.

During a live auction, bidders vied for items that included exotic vacation getaways, instant wine cellars, personal tours and screenings at Pixar Studios, and VIP seats at Giants and River Cats games.

“What a great night for NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement and what a special night for the Shaws,” noted Patt. “Thank you all so very, very much for letting us be a part of the ever-growing NorthBay organization and family.”

Tickets to the 30th Annual Solano Wine & Food Jubilee are still available. The event, a benefit for NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement, will be May 20 at the Harbison Event Center at the Nut Tree in Vacaville. Sponsors of the 30th annual event are Al and Patt Shaw, Freeman Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Rami Yanni of Vacaville Buick GMC, Nissan and Hyundai, Western Health Advantage, DPR Construction and Brett and Mimi Johnson.
