Stay Active, Stay Healthy

Remaining active and staying healthy go hand-in-hand, according to NorthBay Healthcare physician Angela Lim, D.O., a specialist in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM).

Numerous studies have shown the importance of diet and physical activity in maintaining health. Being physically active helps control weight, combats disease, improves mood, boosts energy, and promotes better sleep.

"Our bodies are made to move, so it's important to do what you can," she said. "Exercise doesn't have to mean pumping weight. It can be as simple as stretching for 10 minutes in the morning."

But how do you remain active when physical pain and disease interfere?

OMM is a way of diagnosing and treating the body using your hands and Dr. Lim said it can be used to treat many conditions including neck and lower back issues, arthritis and even in treating pregnant moms and their babies.

OMM can play a part in getting people up and active. "If you are hurting and can't move, I can help ease some of the pain so you can exercise and move a little bit more," she said.

Staying active also involves being aware of healthy lifestyle choices.

"We evaluate what your diet is like, what you do for exercise, if any, and when we get into what your trauma history is, if you've had falls or care accidents, that could affect your body," Dr. Lim explained.
