Professional Profile

I always knew I liked health care and wanted a career in that field. I have many family members who were nurses and worked in health care and my mom and sisters encouraged me to try nursing. It wasn’t until I took pre-nursing courses that I found out how diverse the field was. I was hooked.

I started out working in respiratory telemetry unit as a nurse but I realized I wanted to direct care. For me, it was the drive for greater clinical knowledge, professional collaboration, and autonomy that led me to seek further training.

After practicing as a family nurse practitioner, I have to admit that I wound up in the field of occupational health a bit by accident! I never learned about the specialty in school but stumbled into it after a friend had encouraged me to pursue this specialty. I had a "light bulb" moment and realized it was the perfect fit for me.

I am drawn to occupational medicine because I enjoy learning about other professions and companies. In addition, I can evaluate a variety of problems such as musculoskeletal injuries and chemical exposures all in the same day while keeping an emphasis on prevention as the foundation of the specialty.

I strongly believe in evidence-based medicine, but I also understand that for it to work, people need to be engaged in their own health. For that reason, I focus on making sure my patients are well-informed about their health and treatment options.. I enjoy building trust with my patients and collaborating with them to address their health concerns. I want to make each visit as fruitful and non-intimidating as possible.

I feel that when someone is injured on the job, it is equally important to get people not only back to work in some capacity but also back to the things they enjoy doing in life. For patients, the worker's compensation system can sometimes be a challenging and confusing process. I want to make that process of maneuvering through the system as easy as possible.

For this reason, I prefer a collaborative approach by building a rapport with patients so that we can work together to create a clear plan of action.
