Endocrinologist Profile

As an endocrinologist, I care for patients who have issues with their hormonal system. This can range from diabetes to thyroid disease, pituitary disease, and adrenal disease — all of these are hormonal diseases. I also help patients with things that might not be thought of as hormonal, such as osteoporosis.

I grew up in Montana and I come from a family of many educators. While I chose medicine as a career, much of what I do involves teaching. Caring for my patients involves teaching them what their disease is and how they are going to take care of it, particularly with diabetes patients. At the end of the day I can’t be there to help my diabetic patients choose the right food and exercise properly and take their medicines properly. I have to teach them how to do those things for themselves.

I served in the U.S. Air Force and that is where I completed my residency and fellowship training. Initially, I thought I wanted to pursue cardiology but it was during my residency that I discovered I really enjoyed endocrine medicine and explaining these diseases to my patients.

I enjoy talking with my patients very much. I find I get as much out of it as hopefully they get from me. It brings me the greatest joy in my work when I have a patient who leaves my office with a good understanding of their disease and the plan we will use to treat it. When I get the sense that they understand, that means I’ve done my job the way I want to do it.

My practice style involves a personal approach. While patients may have similar diseases, they have specific aspects to their disease that make them unique and I try to recognize that in each person under my care.

When I am not working, I am a fan of soccer. I have played most of my life and as my children grew up, I found myself coaching in schools as well as club soccer. It is my off-duty passion.
