Vascular Surgeon Profile

I knew I wanted to be a doctor from a very young age and as I grew older, math and science just came more naturally to me.

It was during medical school that I became sure that I would be a surgeon. It is more hands-on and appeals to me far more than simply working in a medical office setting.

Vascular surgery involves the blood vessels and my main focus in on peripheral artery disease (in the arms and legs) and I have also done a lot of work in creating access for dialysis. If your kidneys fail, unless and until you have a successful kidney transplant, you will need dialysis therapy to clean and filter your blood. The first step in that process is establishing dialysis access. I often explain it to my patients by telling them that the doctors need to have access to their blood in order to clean it. A fistula (taking a piece of a vein from your arm or leg and sewing it into a nearby artery) gives them access to a large amount of blood in a shorter amount of time.

I tend to be very open with my patients. I give it to them straight. I treat them like I would like to be treated. I think of it as being part of a team with the patient. They do their part and I do mine and we get through it together.

The best part of my work is when I see the patients afterward with a good result. When they come and tell me about all the things they can do differently now - from being able to walk their dog or walk around the block - that's the best. It's great. This is the reason I am a doctor. I am here to help people and make their lives better.

When I am not working, I have a lot of outside interests. I like movies, I enjoy fly fishing, and I absolutely love hockey!

See my past Facebook #OurDocTalk. #OurDocTalk is a series of live Facebook chats that answer questions from our patients with a different physician every other week on the NorthBay Healthcare Facebook page.
