Elena Minakova, MD
NeonatologyI have wanted to be a doctor since I was four years old. I was inspired by my grandmother, who was a surgeon and an incredible role model.
I decided to focus on pediatrics because I love the hope and resilience children possess, and I love the opportunity to celebrate each of the steps they take toward improvement. I was drawn to Neonatology because of the strength and tenacity babies exhibit. And, since NICU hospitalizations can range from weeks to months, I enjoy the opportunity to form long-term relationships with parents and their babies.
Parents struggle with stress and unknowns when their baby has to be in the NICU, and I want my families to feel comfortable asking questions. I strive to establish the kind of relationship that allows parents to have their input and concerns validated, so parents can expect frequent, direct communication with me. I emphasize a team-based approach toward patient care, because I believe staff and parental input is key for developing the best 360-degree perspective on how to optimize medical care for each baby.
For me, there is professional satisfaction when I perform procedures that have the capacity to save lives and substantially improve patient outcomes.
It is a privilege to take care of a newborn and to be part of a medical team that is dedicated to optimizing patient care. And at the end of the day, I get the most joy from seeing the parents’ excitement when babies are ready to be discharged home.
When not at work, I enjoy running, going on hikes, figure skating and playing with my two young children.
