Talk of NorthBay Adds Another Meeting Site

Posted: September 12, 2019

Talk of NorthBay Toastmasters Club is expanding its meeting schedule to include Thursday meetings at the NorthBay Medical Center Annex building.

For years, the club has held its meetings from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Green Valley Administration Center. Those meetings will continue, but many employees have asked for the group to hold meetings at the hospital so they can attend on their lunch hours. So beginning Sept. 12, the club will add meetings every other Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Annex conference rooms 3/4.

Toastmasters is an international speaking and leadership organization. Its members learn how to give an effective speech, how to tell a captivating story, and how to lead a group of people.

“It gives you the confidence to succeed in a fun-filled and supportive  environment,” said Joelyn Gropp, assistant vice president of Facilities Development with NorthBay, and one of the original founders of the Talk of NorthBay group.

The club is free for NorthBay employees and participants can earn awards.

The Thursday meetings will be led by club member Art Smith, patient experience ambassador, and Club President Jennifer Johnson, administrative support specialist.

Art is thrilled to be a part of the effort, saying Toastmasters has made a huge difference in his life.

“When I first heard of Toastmasters, my initial reaction was, I’d NEVER be able to talk in front of a group of people without dying of fright. But there was something that somebody saw in me that I didn’t even see in myself,” Art said. “I went to Toastmasters as a guest and ever since my life and opinion of myself has changed for the better.”

He said he discovered the club is a supportive place and has taught him to not only be a better speaker but a better listener. “This has been extremely helpful in my role at work because I am constantly talking to people while I do my job at NorthBay,” he said. “Toastmasters has made me more proficient in what I attempt to do in life because I am a much better communicator.”
