Grateful Firefighter, Family Say Thanks

Posted: July 16, 2021

Fairfield Firefighter-Paramedic Ryan Hughes and his family stopped by NorthBay Medical Center Saturday, July 10 to say thank you — for saving his life.

There were hugs all around as part of the care team gathered around to celebrate.

“Just thank you,” said his wife, Taylor. “Thank you for him!”

Ryan collapsed while fighting a fire in Fairfield June 17. Thanks to resuscitation efforts by his colleagues, a quick delivery by Medic Ambulance and great teamwork in both the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit, Ryan is now on the road to recovery.

His care team was able to use high-tech cooling technology, known as Targeted Temperature Management, as part of the treatment. Once he was stable, he was transferred to UC San Francisco for specialized heart care. He’s now home, recovering in Livermore, thankful to be alive, enjoying time with Taylor, Paxton, 3, and Dawson, 1, and eagerly awaiting a little sister due soon.
