Golfers Brave Heat for Golf & Tennis Classic

Temperatures may have hovered around the 100 degree mark for most of the day, but the heat didn't deter a full complement of golfers and tennis players from turning out for NorthBay Guild's 31st Annual Golf & Tennis Classic on Monday, July 14.

"This is the Guild's fourth year of a five-year commitment to support the NorthBay Medical Center Trauma Program through funds raised at the Golf & Tennis Classic," explained Jane Hilliard, director of volunteer services, "so we invited our volunteers to come up with ways to keep the trauma theme going."

Trauma touches could be found throughout the 18-hole golf course. Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Richerson, R.N., and Rhonda Martin, R.N., assistant vice president or Nursing Operations, greeted tournament participants with Bloody Mary cocktails at the registration desk, served through saline bottles and IV drips. Volunteers drove around in "crash" golf carts with flashing blue lights, and Jello shots in large plastic syringes were offered to interested golfers at the 17th hole by Trauma Program Director Heather Venezio and Cindy Smith, lead data analyst for Emergency Services.

But, perhaps the best-themed hole was the one staffed by Simulation Lab Coordinator Lacy DeQuattro and Laura McGuire, cardiovascular patient care program manager, who decorated their stand with an ambulance gurney and CPR dummies. They poured "Washington Apple-tinis" into tiny specimen cups labeled with reminders that "An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away."

Everything got started at 11 a.m. for the golfers; the tennis players were already in full swing.

"While it was a warm day, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and we couldn't have done all of it without the help of our tireless volunteers, staff and the generous support of our sponsors," Jane notes.

Here are the results from the competitions:
