Vacaville Chamber Honors NorthBay Innovator

Adrian Riggs, assistant vice president of NorthBay Health Advantage, is the Vacaville Chamber of Commerce’s candidate for the first-ever Solano County Innovator of the Year award.

Riggs and two others — nominated by area business groups — will compete for the top honor. The winner will be announced at an Innovation Expo in Vacaville March 2.

Nominated by Elnora Cameron, president of NorthBay Health Advantage, for his leadership in not only building NorthBay HealthSpring Fitness and its programs from the ground up, Riggs is also creating the new and innovative program, “Movement is Medicine,” a program just launched in January.

“I’m very excited to be launching this program; getting this great recognition from the chamber is just frosting on the cake,” he said. “I’m honored.”

In the Movement is Medicine program, local physicians don’t just prescribe medication, but a specific and progressive fitness routine. A specialist meets with the patient to assess needs and goals, and then works to develop the patient’s confidence in their ability to flourish along their journey.

“Movement is Medicine,” is a therapeutic-based introductory training program designed for patients who are dealing with a diagnosed medical condition or are considered at risk, explains Adrian. He oversees NorthBay HealthSpring Fitness, which is managed by EXOS|Medifit, a worldwide industry leader in training professional athletes and the military, among others.

Riggs has been working on the project with the HealthSpring team, including Mike Cole, fitness manager, and Julie Cassara, fitness specialist, since July, shortly after the fitness center’s grand opening. The initial launch involved NorthBay physicians, but plans are for the program to be opened to physicians and providers outside of NorthBay Healthcare, too.

The program includes a specialized training program specifically designed for each individual by a qualified fitness specialist, in HealthSpring’s state-of-the-art facility.

Although insurance will not cover the cost, special package prices will be offered.

HealthSpring Fitness Specialists hold degrees in health-related fields. They are certified in all areas of fitness, including a variety specialty certifications, and have many years of experience working with clients with special needs, said Adrian.

Qualifying conditions to participate in the program can include transition from physical therapy into post rehabilitation, managing an existing medical condition, needing to improve strength or lose weight in preparation for a medical procedure, or a program designed to help reverse or even prevent certain medical conditions from occurring.
