Partnership Salutes Dr. Long as 'Best Doctor'

Posted: December 21, 2018

NorthBay Cancer Center Medical Director James Long, M.D., earned the title of Partnership HealthPlan of California's 2018 Best Doctor - Southern Region, after he received hundreds of nominations by his patients.

Each year, Partnership HealthPlan of California (PHC) asks its members to nominate a physician they feel embodies the true spirit of healthcare excellence. In the nomination forms, patients comment on their nominee's ability to listen to them and their ability to provide information in a way that they understand. Nominations underwent rigorous review by several Partnership committees, with the final review conducted by the PHC Consumer Advisory Committee, according to Dr. Colleen Townsend, medical director for PHC's Napa-Solano region.

Dr. Long learned he had been tapped for the award in early December, and the award was presented at the Cancer Center on Dec. 21.

"Dr. Long always explains everything extremely clearly in a mode tailored to the education and experience of each patient," one nomination noted. "He uses multiple modalities (words, drawings, charts) to explain and always allows you and your family to ask any question."

The patient continued, "Dr. Long is always available. He really cares. Dr. Long has literally saved my life several times."

"It is humbling to be nominated by such a large organization and I probably will have no greater honor during my life. But this doesn't happen in a vacuum; I'm surrounded by such good people - from the front office staff, nurse navigators, cancer nurses, pharmacy - it's great to be associated with them."

Justine Zilliken, NorthBay Healthcare's assistant vice president, specialty & surgical services, congratulated Dr. Long on the award, saying, "On behalf of the patients you serve and everyone who loves them, thank you for exemplifying compassionate care, advanced medicine, close to home."
