Vascular services and Procedures

NorthBay expert vascular surgeons offer you a specialized approach to diagnose and treat a wide variety of vascular conditions. Vascular surgeons treat disease processes of the blood vessels that supply blood throughout the body, such as arteries to the legs and within the neck. They also treat aneurysms, swelling, blood clots, varicose veins and create hemodialysis access for patients with end-stage renal disease.

NorthBay vascular surgeons provide the full spectrum of care, including medications, minimally invasive therapies as well as surgery for vascular diseases. Surgical procedures include angiography, balloon angioplasties and the placement of stents within blood vessels, as well as open surgical operations. Our expert surgeons will determine the appropriate care plan based on your individual needs.

Vascular Diagnostic Testing

State-of-the-art diagnostic technology is available in the outpatient setting designed for rapid diagnosis of vascular conditions.

Vascular Treatments

  • Aneurysm screening and follow up tests may include ultrasound, CT scan or MRI
  • Repair can be done with open surgery or minimally invasive techniques (endovascular), depending on the location of the aneurysm.
  • Carotid ultrasound examines the blood flow through the carotid arteries in the neck, and is used to follow disease progression.
  • Repair can be done with carotid artery surgery to remove plaque buildup from inside a carotid artery to prevent strokes.
  • Repair can also be done with a less invasive stenting procedure, called TCAR (transcarotid artery revascularization).
  • Ultrasound is performed to evaluate which access type will be best. It is also used for follow-up access over time.
  • Access for hemodialysis is created either with an arteriovenous fistula (AVF), a connection between an artery and vein that allows the vein to enlarge, or an arteriovenous graft, which is a plastic shunt to allow blood to pass through a dialysis machine.
  • Repair, revision, or removal of hemodialysis access.
  • Deep or superficial thrombosis is often diagnosed with ultrasound.
  • Treatment options include:
    • Placement of Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filter, a small device occasionally placed in the IVC to help prevent blood clots from traveling to the lungs
    • Suctioning of the clot out of the leg
    • Medications
    • Rarely, stents can be placed to open blocked veins
    • Open surgical procedures including vein bypasses can be performed
  • Diagnostic options include Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI), which is a blood pressure of your legs and toes, and ultrasound of your arteries.  CT scan or MRI can also be completed.
  • There are many treatment options for arterial disease.  Some options that are less invasive:
    • Angioplasty or the use of a balloon to widen a blocked artery.
    • Stenting, which is placement of a wire-mesh tube (stent) to keep the artery open.
    • Atherectomy is when a catheter with a sharp blade or laser on the end is used to remove plaque from a blocked artery.
    • Lithoplasty is a treatment option which uses shock-waves to destroy calcium.
  • Some patients require surgery, which can include peripheral artery bypass, which reroutes blood flow around a blocked artery.
  • Diagnosis is largely based on ultrasound examinations.
  • Treatment options include:
    • Peripheral vein radiofrequency ablation which is when heat is used to clear a blockage in a peripheral artery, or a procedure which uses a glue to seal the vein.
    • Microphlebectomy is a vascular procedure that removes varicose veins through small incisions in the skin.
    • Sclerotherapy is when medication is used to clear spider veins and varicose veins.
