Our Shoulder Replacement Surgical Options

  • Total Shoulder Replacement
In a total shoulder replacement, our surgeons remove the damaged bone and cartilage from your shoulder joint and replace them with prosthetic components. This can involve fitting a prosthetic “socket” to the damaged shoulder socket, fitting a prosthetic “ball” to the top of the upper arm bone (humerus), or replacing both the ball and socket — all options are designed to mimic the normal anatomy of your shoulder and restore your rotator cuff’s ability to power and position your arm.
  • Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement
Sometimes the rotator cuff muscles in our shoulders become too damaged to maintain their normal function of powering and positioning our arms — in this case, a reverse total shoulder replacement may be the better choice for you. As the name implies, a reverse shoulder replacement does the opposite of a standard shoulder replacement, fitting a prosthetic “ball” to the shoulder socket and a prosthetic “socket” to the upper arm bone (humerus). This allows your shoulder to start using your deltoid muscle to power and position the arm, since the rotator cuff can no longer perform that function.
