Best Practices for Protecting Your Skin
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States — but also one of the most preventable. Follow these evidence-based practices to protect yourself and your family every day.
1 Apply Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen Daily
Use SPF 30 or higher — rain or shine. Apply 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Don't forget ears, neck, and the tops of feet.
2 Seek Shade Between 10am and 4pm
UV rays are strongest in the midday hours. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, especially during Northern California's warmer months.
3 Wear Protective Clothing & Eyewear
Long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses reduce exposure significantly. Look for UPF-rated clothing for extended outdoor activities.
4 Avoid Tanning Beds & Reflective Surfaces
Indoor tanning increases melanoma risk by 75%. Sand, snow, and water can reflect up to 80% of UV rays — increasing your exposure unexpectedly.
5 Perform Regular Self-Checks
Examine your skin head-to-toe monthly. Use the ABCDE rule: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving. See a dermatologist annually — or sooner if anything changes.
6 Protect Children & Check Medications
Children's skin is more vulnerable to UV damage. Some medications — including common antibiotics and blood pressure drugs — can increase sun sensitivity. Ask your provider.

Access to world-class expertise, close at home
As a Mayo Clinic Care Network member, NorthBay Health physicians can consult with Mayo Clinic specialists on complex cases — giving our community access to one of the nation's top medical networks without leaving their county.
Adults should have a full-body skin exam at least once a year. If you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair skin, many moles, or significant sun exposure history, your provider may recommend more frequent visits. Talk to your primary care physician or a dermatologist in our professional network to determine the right screening schedule for you.
Use the ABCDE rule:
- Asymmetry (one half looks different)
- Border irregularity
- Color variation (multiple shades of brown, black, red)
- Diameter larger than a pencil eraser
- Evolving (changing over time).
Any new growth, sore that doesn't heal, or change in an existing mole should be evaluated promptly.
Sunscreen significantly reduces your risk but is most effective as part of a layered approach — including protective clothing, shade-seeking, and avoiding peak UV hours. No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV radiation. Consistent daily use of broad-spectrum SPF 30+ is the gold standard recommendation.
Many health insurance plans, including employer plans and Medicare, cover annual preventive skin screenings. NorthBay Health accepts most major insurance plans. Contact us before your visit and our team will help verify your coverage and explain any out-of-pocket costs in advance.
Seek care promptly if your child has blistering, fever, severe pain, or signs of dehydration after a sunburn. Severe burns in children under 1 year always warrant immediate evaluation. For milder sunburns, cool compresses and oral fluids help — but consult your pediatrician if you're concerned.
Dermatologists diagnose and treat most skin cancers (basal cell, squamous cell, early melanoma) through procedures like Mohs surgery. If cancer is advanced or has spread, a medical oncologist may be involved for systemic therapies like immunotherapy. NorthBay Health's integrated team coordinates care between specialties to ensure continuity for every patient.
