Education

You and your support person or "coach" will begin your journey with an orientation program where our program staff will explain what you can expect during every step of the process and what happens during rehabilitation after you leave the hospital.

  • You will learn exercises you can perform before your surgery and proper nutrition to help build your strength and speed your recovery.
  • You and your coach will have the opportunity to meet your healthcare team before you come to the hospital.
  • You will enjoy the company of others about to have joint replacement surgery.

Support

When you are a patient in our joint replacement program you have a built-in support system, and experience the camaraderie of a “group experience”. Studies show that patients who recover as a team reach their goals faster and with fewer complications.

  • In our the program you enter the as a group and have procedures on the same day.
  • You go through the recovery process as a group — eating, exercising and enjoying various activities, where together they provide encouragement and support to one another.
  • Most patients will have a close friend or family member act as their “Coach.” The Coach plays an important role in helping the patient reach their goals, continuing to offer support and positive reinforcement at home. The Coach is encouraged to attend the pre-operative classes.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation begins in the hospital as soon as the day of surgery. Under supervision of your surgeon, you will begin working with physical and occupational therapists to gain strength and flexibility while getting used to your new joint.

  • Starting as small as standing and taking a few steps away from the bed, you will soon able to walk up and down the halls using a walker the day after surgery.
  • You will probably be ready to leave the hospital within two to three days of your surgery.
  • Most of our patients return to work and activities they enjoy, depending on the physical demands, within 6 to 12 weeks.
  • You can expect to follow an individualized program of strengthening and physical therapy for two to three months following surgery.
